Periploca graecaIn May 2005, the first Workshop on Invasive Plants in the Mediterranean Type Regions of the World was co-organized by the Conservatoire Botanique National Méditerranéen de Porquerolles, the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization, the Council of Europe and the World Conservation Union – Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation in Mèze (France). All outcomes of this workshop - presentations, proceedings and the Mèze Declaration are available on this website (click on the above link). A second edition workshop will be organized in Trabzon, on the Black Sea on 2010-08-02/06.

Objectives of the workshop

The first workshop was successful and allowed many exchanges between participants and opportunities to discuss specific and concrete topics; the second workshop is organized in the same spirit.
This Workshop therefore has the objective to be:

  • a global platform for networking,
  • an opportunity for discussing specific plant invasions issues,
  • a place to learn about varied topics such as management options, biology of invaders and ecology of invasions, prediction and mapping, prevention, ranking and risk assessment, political options, legislative tools, invasions in small islands, early warning, control and containment, education and awareness raising.
  • a chance for raising awareness on biological invasions in the Mediterranean Type regions of the World.

 

Audience

This Workshop is open to civil servants within Governments (NPPOs, Ministries of Environment), researchers, the horticultural industry and trade, land managers, etc.

The organization of the workshop is still in its preliminary phase, and co-organizers and sponsors are most welcome. The workshop will consist of 2 days of presentations and discussions, and will be followed by 2 days of field work to form the basis for local inventories of the exotic flora of the Trabzon area and to contribute to the knowledge on invasive alien plants by hands on activities.

The workshop will take place at the Novotel of Trabzon (www.novotel.com), and arrangements will be made through the agency SSC Tur (www.ssc.com.tr).
