Use of integrated measures in a systems approach for pest risk management of citrus fruit for citrus canker
Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2003-10-06/10
The ICPM has decided that a specific standard on how to manage risks presented by citrus fruits which may carry citrus canker, caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri, needed to be finalized. A working group has been called to develop further the ISPM on ‘Use of integrated measures in a systems approach for pest risk management of citrus fruit for citrus canker’ taking into account the general recommendations which were made in ISPM no. 14 (‘The use of integrated measures in a systems approach for pest risk management’).
The aim of this meeting convened in Buenos Aires was to propose alternative measures to import prohibitions or area/place of production freedom. A draft ISPM has been prepared and includes the following proposed measures to be applied in areas where citrus canker occurs:
- pre-harvest inspections done at different stages of production.
- post-harvest inspections.
- post-harvest treatments.
Several points (e.g. inspection and sampling methods, impact of grading/sorting on level of fruit infection, detailed information on disease distribution, etc.) still remain to be settled by the experts. The Working Group will continue to discuss the draft ISPM by e-mail or perhaps during an additional meeting, but it is hoped that this new ISPM will be finalized and presented to the Standards Committee in April 2004.
